betrayal
How can people be so cruel and deceitful?
How could they put our mutual friends in such an awful position?
I have never been hurt and betrayed like this. I wouldn't wish this pain on anyone.
...
They are selfish, lying cowards, and they have to live with the guilt of hurting me so deeply and with the knowledge that they destroyed our friendship.
I, on the other hand, am rid of two people who clearly had no respect for me or my friends. I also have a huge group of people who love, support and respect me.
I win.
To my true friends, thank you so much for your love and support. I am truly blessed to call you my friends.

You can create maps of countries you've visited, or US states/Canadian Provinces/European countries that you've visited.
Here's my US map:
A slight East Coast bias, although I would love to visit Washington, Oregon, Alaska and Hawaii.
My world map, unfortunately, is not very interesting. I've never left the US... So, instead, here is my map of places I'd like to visit:
38 countries... I'd better get busy. :)
Oh, in case you didn't notice, I decided to change my template. Enjoy!

Ford Pulls Some Ads From Gay Press
Move Follows Boycott By a Religious Group
By Sholnn Freeman
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, December 7, 2005; D01
Ford Motor Co. said it will stop running ads for its Jaguar and Land Rover brands in the gay press, helping to avoid a confrontation with conservative Christians but setting up a fight with gays and lesbians.
The American Family Association, a conservative religious group, launched a boycott of Ford this year for extending marriage benefits to same-sex couples and giving "thousands of dollars to support homosexual groups and their agenda," the group said in written statement. The group criticized Ford for supporting gay commitment ceremonies and gay pride parades.
Ford spokesman Mike Moran said the move to stop advertising Jaguars and Land Rovers in gay publications such as the Advocate was based on a decision to streamline marketing budgets. Moran would not say what other magazine categories might be affected, citing competitive reasons.
Volvo, another Ford-owned luxury brand, will continue to advertise in gay publications. Ford has not advertised its U.S. brands, which include Ford, Mercury and Lincoln, in gay publications and does not plan to start, Moran said. "We've made it clear that decisions on where Ford brands advertise are made for business reasons, not as a social statement one way or the other," he said.
Ford has focused on niche markets at various times -- for example, trying to reach black families though marketing at churches and by supporting gospel music.
Gay groups denounced Ford's decision as a capitulation to the religious right. "It looks pretty clear that they have bowed to the American Family Association's demands," said Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign, a gay rights advocacy group.
Ford is the latest company to be ensnared in the culture wars over homosexuality, religion and American culture. Microsoft Corp. became a target of religious groups this year for its support of a Washington state bill to ban discrimination against gays and lesbians. The company withdrew its support for the bill, saying it was not caving to pressure but wanted to avoid taking a stand on a politically sensitive issue. After protest by employees, Microsoft reinstated its support for the anti-discrimination bill.
Ford became a target of the American Family Association in May. The association was founded in 1977 by Donald E. Wildmon, who was the pastor of a United Methodist church in Mississippi at the time. It claims to be one of the largest pro-family organizations in the country with nearly 3 million supporters. The association owns 200 radio stations under the American Family Radio name, according to its Web site. In the past, the group has targeted Walt Disney Co. for extending benefits to gay couples and criticized the Fox television series "Boston Public" for sexually oriented story lines.
The prospect of a boycott from the American Family Association, which gathered 110,000 signatures on an anti-Ford petition, worried some Ford dealers in the South, such as Jerry Reynolds of Texas. Reynolds said he started getting calls from customers and realized that a boycott would hurt business, so he faxed a letter to the association. "I said I am a dealer and I am the one who is going to get the brunt of the boycott," he said.
Reynolds and five other dealers met with Wildmon during the minister's subsequent visit to Dallas. In the meeting, he said, Wildmon agreed to give the dealers time to work things out with Ford officials. Subsequently, Ford executives held discussions with the association, including a meeting last month at the AFA's headquarters in Tupelo, Miss. After the meeting, the association agreed to call off the Ford boycott, saying in a written statement that its concerns were being addressed by the company.
Neither Reynolds nor Ford executives would specify what was discussed. Representatives from the American Family Association also declined to comment.
Reynolds said no deal was made on advertising. "There was no agreement struck -- period," he said. The AFA, he said, seemed to appreciate the fact that the dealers and Ford would simply sit down and talk. "Everybody wants there to be something. But there wasn't. We just talked."
Ford's success in heading off a confrontation with the AFA appears to have pushed the company into a new fight. Solmonese, of the Human Rights Campaign, said he spoke yesterday with a top Ford executive in Washington but was not satisfied with the company's explanation.
"Ford Motor Co. has a big public relations mess on its hands that it needs to clean up in short order," Solmonese said. He said his group is galvanizing its 600,000 members to protest Ford's advertising decision with letters and e-mails.
"Ford has been a friend to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender consumers and employees in the past," the group said in an e-mailed "Action Alert." "E-mail Ford today -- ask them to reject the American Family Association's assertions . . . and reaffirm their support for fairness."
Late yesterday Ford noted in a written statement that it would not change its employment policies: "Ford's commitment to diversity as an employer and corporate citizen remains unchanged. Any suggestion to the contrary is just plain wrong."
'Holiday' Cards Ring Hollow for Some on Bushes' List
By Alan Cooperman
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, December 7, 2005; A01
What's missing from the White House Christmas card? Christmas.
This month, as in every December since he took office, President Bush sent out cards with a generic end-of-the-year message, wishing 1.4 million of his close friends and supporters a happy "holiday season."
Many people are thrilled to get a White House Christmas card, no matter what the greeting inside. But some conservative Christians are reacting as if Bush stuck coal in their stockings.
"This clearly demonstrates that the Bush administration has suffered a loss of will and that they have capitulated to the worst elements in our culture," said William A. Donohue, president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights.
Bush "claims to be a born-again, evangelical Christian. But he sure doesn't act like one," said Joseph Farah, editor of the conservative Web site WorldNetDaily.com. "I threw out my White House card as soon as I got it."
Religious conservatives are miffed because they have been pressuring stores to advertise Christmas sales rather than "holiday specials" and urging schools to let students out for Christmas vacation rather than for "winter break." They celebrated when House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) insisted that the sparkling spectacle on the Capitol lawn should be called the Capitol Christmas Tree, not a holiday spruce.
Then along comes a generic season's greeting from the White House, paid for by the Republican National Committee. The cover art is also secular, if not humanist: It shows the presidential pets -- two dogs and a cat -- frolicking on a snowy White House lawn.
"Certainly President and Mrs. Bush, because of their faith, celebrate Christmas," said Susan Whitson, Laura Bush's press secretary. "Their cards in recent years have included best wishes for a holiday season, rather than Christmas wishes, because they are sent to people of all faiths."
That is the same rationale offered by major retailers for generic holiday catalogues, and it is accepted by groups such as the National Council of Churches. "I think it's more important to put Christ back into our war planning than into our Christmas cards," said the council's general secretary, the Rev. Bob Edgar, a former Democratic congressman.
But the White House's explanation does not satisfy the groups -- which have grown in number in recent years -- that believe there is, in the words of the Heritage Foundation, a "war on Christmas" involving an "ever-stronger push toward a neutered 'holiday' season so that non-Christians won't be even the slightest bit offended."
One of the generals on the pro-Christmas side is Tim Wildmon, president of the American Family Association in Tupelo, Miss. "Sometimes it's hard to tell whether this is sinister -- it's the purging of Christ from Christmas -- or whether it's just political correctness run amok," he said. "I think in the case of the White House, it's just political correctness."
Wildmon does not give retailers the same benefit of the doubt. This year, he has called for a consumer boycott of Target stores because the chain issued a holiday advertising circular that did not mention Christmas. Last year, he aimed a similar boycott at Macy's Inc., which averted a repeat this December by proclaiming "Merry Christmas" in its advertising and in-store displays.
"It bothers me that the White House card leaves off any reference to Jesus, while we've got Ramadan celebrations in the White House," Wildmon said. "What's going on there?"
At the Catholic League, Donohue had just announced a boycott of the Lands' End catalogue when he received his White House holiday card. True, he said, the Bushes included a verse from Psalm 28, but Psalms are in the Old Testament and do not mention Jesus' birth.
"They'd better address this, because they're no better than the retailers who have lost the will to say 'Merry Christmas,' " he said.
Donohue said that Wal-Mart, facing a threatened boycott, added a Christmas page to its Web site and fired a customer relations employee who wrote a letter linking Christmas to "Siberian shamanism." He was not mollified by a letter from Lands' End saying it "adopted the 'holiday' terminology as a way to comply with one of the basic freedoms granted to all Americans: freedom of religion."
"Ninety-six percent of Americans celebrate Christmas," Donohue said. "Spare me the diversity lecture."
Diversity has been a hallmark of White House greeting cards for some time, according to Mary Evans Seeley of Tampa, Fla., author of "Season's Greetings From the White House." The last presidential Christmas card that mentioned Christmas was in 1992. It was sent by George H.W. and Barbara Bush, parents of the current president.
Seeley said the first president to send out true Christmas cards, as opposed to signed photographs or handwritten letters, was Franklin D. Roosevelt. "Merry Christmas From the President and Mrs. Roosevelt," said his first annual card, in 1933.
Like many modern touches, the generic New Year's card was introduced to the White House by John and Jacqueline Kennedy. In 1962, they had Hallmark print 2,000 cards, of which 1,800 cards said "The President and Mrs. Kennedy Wish You a Blessed Christmas" and 200 said "With Best Wishes for a Happy New Year."
Lyndon and Lady Bird Johnson continued that tradition for a couple of years, but it required keeping track of Christian and non-Christian recipients. Beginning in 1966, they wished everyone a "Joyous Christmas," and no president has attempted the two-card trick since.
Seeley dates the politicization of the White House Christmas card to Richard M. Nixon, who increased the number of recipients tenfold, to 40,000, in his first year. The numbers since have snowballed, hitting 125,000 under Jimmy Carter, topping 400,000 under Bill Clinton and rising to more than a million under the current Bushes, with each president's political party paying the bill.
The wording, meanwhile, has often flip-flopped. Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter put "Merry Christmas" in their 1977 card and then switched to "Holiday Season" for the next three years. Ronald and Nancy Reagan, similarly, began with a "Joyous Christmas" in 1981 and 1982 but doled out generic holiday wishes from 1983 to 1988. The elder President Bush stayed in the "Merry Christmas" spirit all four years, and the Clintons opted for inclusive greetings for all of their eight years.
The current Bush has straddled the divide, offering generic greetings along with an Old Testament verse. To some religious conservatives, that makes all the difference.
"There's a verse from Scripture in it. I don't mind that at all, as long as we don't try to pretend we're not a nation under God," said the Rev. Jerry Falwell.

The religious right is really pissing me off today
There are so many things in the article that piss me off, I almost don't know where to start. First, I think it's kind of funny that the president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights says that the Bush Administration has "capitulated to the worst elements in our culture." And just what are those "elements?" The Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution (also known as that thing that the President is supposed to serve and protect).
Second, I'm curious that statistic that "Ninety-six percent of Americans celebrate Christmas." 96%? 15% of Americans don't believe in God and more than 5% of Americans are affiliated with a non-Christian religion, so I really doubt that 96% celebrate Christmas. A little fuzzy math, perhaps? (Sorry, I couldn't help myself.)
This is America folks. A country founded on the idea of freedom. That includes freedom of speach, freedom of assembly, freedom of religion, and freedom to word greeting cards however the heck you want!

Wait, do gays not drive cars? Ford, this is rediculous. You made a wonderful decision to give marriage benefits to employees in same-sex relationships. And you are still advertising Volvos in the gay press... So, why pull adds for Jaguars and Land Rovers?
And to the American Family Association (as long as that family consists of a mom, dad, 2.3 kids and a golden retriever), I just don't know what to say. Ford has the right to advertise where it wants and the right to give it's employees whatever benefits it wants (as long as their don't hurt the shareholders). So, just give it a rest!

I told you I'd post something happy
First, I had a tot fab time in Pgh two weeks ago. I got to see a) Mal's play b) buggy (and all the buggy folks. Hi buggy folks!) and c) HP4!!!!!!!!
Mal's play was wonderful... and all the Zetas who contributed to keeping me up until 3:30am were wonderful too. :)
HP4 was absolutely amazing! For starters, it doesn't hurt to go see an awesome movie with a stomach full of Pamela's.... *drool* It also doesn't hurt to see it with three of your favorite people (Mal, J'mee and Carly). Hearts to Jamie's borderline pedophilia with regards to Daniel Radcliffe, Mal's obsession with MuggleNet.com, and Carly's laugh. All in all, amazing!
Unfortunately, a PiKA driver got into an accident on Saturday so I didn't see rolls that morning. But I did get up for Mini-Raceday on Sunday. It was really hard to let the committee make decisions without speaking up and giving my opinion, but I managed. Also, they let me keep track of the times. I <3 buggy. I'm not entirely sure how I managed to wake up that early for 4 years, but I guess I'm just a rock star like that (btw, "rock star" is my current word obsession). Anyway, it was a beautiful buggy morning and it went by way too fast.
Skip ahead a few days....
Thanksgiving was okay. It was nice to have a few days off of work, but sleeping in my old twin bed was really strange. I went to a party with Alicia on Saturday and saw a bunch of people of high school that I hadn't seen since graduation. I also found out that a former friend (turned mortal enemy... okay, not quite that bad... but close) has gained *a lot* of weight since high school. Perhaps it makes me a bad person, but I'm really happy about that. :) I had lunch with Kristin on Sunday and we both enjoyed the news about L's weight gain. teehee... We also went to see Rent which was AMAZING! Oh man... this needs a new paragraph...
So, I saw Rent on Broadway six (6!!!!) years ago and loved it! The music is undeniably amazing and the story is so powerful. I wasn't sure how the energy of the musical would transfer to the screen, but I was excited about it. I was not disappointed. Jesse L. Martin was a force of nature and Tracie Thoms' voice blew me away. It was just incredible. I am totally going to buy the DVD when it comes out. Go see it! Right now! What are you waiting for?!!!!!!
Okay... thanks for putting up with this slightly ADD post.

Drills, E-mail quotas and Michelle Pfeiffer
And on top of the construction, the powers that be at work decided that yesterday was a good day to migrate everyone to a different e-mail server or something... Of course, it didn't work and the Help Desk was swamped with calls. I got my e-mail working after about 3 hours. But this morning, all of a sudden, I'm over my e-mail quota and I can't send any e-mail. This is not cool. So I spent 10 minutes on the phone with a real idiot at the Help Desk.
Help Desk: What's your employee number?
Me: 32732.
HD: 02732?
Me: No, 32732.
HD (with an attitude): That's what I said.
Me: No, 3-2-7-3-2.
HD: Huh?
Me: The first digit is one more than 2 and one less than 4.
HD: Oh. 32732.
Me: Yes.
HD: Okay, and how do you spell your last name?
Me: P-L-A-Y-E-R, like baseball player.
HD: P-Y-???
Me: No, P-L-A-Y-E-R, like baseball player.
HD: What?
Me: P-L-A-Y-E-R, like baseball player.
HD: Oh, okay.
I'm not exaggerating. So, I spoke with him 30 minutes ago and he said that someone would call me back. Meanwhile, I can't send any e-mail which is especially inconvient when you're an IT consultant and your managers don't work in the same state as you.
So, all of that stuff is crappy.... But there is some good news! Mal is coming to DC in February to work on a movie starting Michelle Pfeiffer and she (Mal) is staying with me!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *happy dance* I am so excited. The plan is for me to fly to Pgh for her show around Feb. 9, and then she and I will drive back to DC. Mal's only going to be here for a week or so, but that's still totally kick ass. yay!!!!!!!!
.... I wish the Help Desk would call me. :(

Did you miss me?
First, I wish that all of the clocks in my life were connected to some satellite or computer or whatnot so that they would automatically fall back or spring forward for Daylight Savings. I awoke at 9am Sunday morning, and walked out to my living room only to discover that it was actually 8am (I forgot to reset my bedroom clock, and my cable box updated automatically). So, I grumbled to myself for a bit, and then got over it and went to the gym. When I got into my car I was all confused b/c I hadn't reset that clock either. So I reset it. Then I got to the gym and the clock in the Locker Room was wrong... but the clock by the Pull Down machine was right... Ugh... poor brain.
On Monday I woke up and totally thought that I'd slept through my alarm b/c it was light outside. Then I looked at my clock and saw that it was 6:57 (3 minutes before my alarm was set to go off). Poor brain... Then I left work at 7pm and it was totally dark out.
Speaking of leaving work at 7pm, I did that both Monday and Tuesday. Yuck. (Btw, I don't know what's more pathetic: leaving work at 7pm two days in a row or the fact that there were at least a dozen other cars still in the garage when I left on Tuesday). Anyway, as a result of all of the that time in front of my laptop, I developed a migraine around 11am on Wednesday... so I tried to finish up what I was doing as fast as possible (while still doing a good job). That took until 3pm. Then I went home and tried to hide from the light underneath my comforter. I woke up at some point, ate some dinner and watched the West Wing. Life was better.
And today life is grand b/c the Pash is coming to interview with CGI-AMS and she and I are going to dinner tonight w/ Trey and his parents, and then Harriet's gonna stay at my apartment and we're gonna have girl time. Yay!
Oh, almost forgot to write about Halloween. I didn't have a Halloween this year. Instead, I worked, and got home at 7:30pm and then did more work. Also, I bought a bunch of candy but I didn't get any trick-or-treaters... So now I have all this candy that I really don't want around when I'm trying to lose weight... Ugh... I just have to bring it to work and make my co-workers eat it all.... well, except for the Kit-kat bars... I'll keep those. :)

Sara

Weekend Wrap-up
Friday: I met Anne and Mal in DC at the International Spy Museum. It was *very* cool. Then we went back to my apartment (which they really liked), chilled for a few minutes and then realized that we were very hungry and needed to eat! Anne called Kati and the three of us met her and Aaron in Fairfax at Coastal Flats, a really yummy seafood restaurant near my office. Anne and I both had Mojitos with dinner. Yum! Then we went back to my apartment where we all fell asleep in less than 20 minutes.
Saturday: I went to the gym where my personal trainer *destroyed* my triceps (I'm still aching), but I had a really good workout. I got home around 10:30 and the girls were still asleep, so I read a bit and drank my Pumpkin Spice Latte (delish!) They woke up around 11:30, and we all showered and then met Anna at Tyson's Corner for lunch at Chipotle and lots of shopping. We were all very stuffed from Chipotle but that didn't stop us from shopping until 9:30!!!!!!! After realizing that the mall was closing, we decided to go home, order pizza and watch a movie at my place. Anne+Mal+Me+pizza+alcohol+Bridget Jones' Diary = AMAZING!
Sunday: Anne and Mal left at 11am for Lancaster, and I spent the rest of the morning finishing my book. The rest of the day was spent lazing about doing laundry, watching TV and hanging out with the internet. I was planning on watching West Wing with Karthik, but he had to go to work (on a Sunday!!!). So, instead, I went to Giant, bought some salmon, made myself a yummy dinner and watched West Wing on my own. After the amazingness of the last few episodes I have to say that I was disappointed last night. The story lines barely moved forward. :( On the plus side, only 2 more weeks until the live debate episode.

TomKatNifferSton?
Okay... I am really tired of the media's obbsession with creating combo names for celebrity couples. Bennifer (the first time) was kind of amusing b/c of the whole media houpla surrounding J. Lo and Ben Affleck. But TomKat? Brangelina? Vinnifer? Ugh... It is rediculous and I'm sick of it.
Does anyone else agree?
*rant*
I actually had a post in mind regarding something meaningful and less like the random crap I've been posting lately.... but then I forgot it. Sorry... maybe it will come back to me.

Today's winners!
I got an e-mail last week from Independence Air changing my flight to NY for Thanksgiving to and earlier time. I called them tonight and less than 10 minutes after I dialed their number I was booked on an acceptable flight. The customer service representative was helpful and curtious (unlike the jerks at Dell). Hooray! Independence Air gets a gold star from me.
I am also declaring myself winner of the day for having a good workout this morning, for getting two really cute pairs of shoes from Ann Taylor Loft for 25% off(Here's the brown shoes and the black shoes are pictured below -- yes, that's my feet in the black shoes... they aren't on ATL's website), and for correctly guessing the identity of the security leak on The West Wing. I rule!

- the apple I am eating right now
- hot tea
- the soundtracks to Elizabethtown and Rent
- my plans for tonight (dinner with Karthik at Star Thai and then going home and watching Lost)

Wow.... this is a much better post than the previous version. I hope you enjoyed it.

JADs, Drexel, and the Shitsburgh Tow Pound
Me: "Lots... Let me tell you all about it."
I took Amtrak to Philly/Trenton on Monday for three days of JADs at NJDEP. They went really well, and we actually finished a little bit early on Thursday. So I called up Shelley to see if she was free. AND SHE WAS!!! So my co-worker drove me to Philly on his way to the airport and I got to see a bit of Drexel and Shelley's dorm room.
Here's what I learned at Drexel:
- I actually don't look all that rediculous in hats
- my sister has become a Beatles fan (joy!)
- my feet *have* shrunk
This morning I got a call from my mom b/c she got a letter from the Pittsburgh Tow Pound with a bill for $8 gazillion dollars (actually I think it was $118 or something like that) and telling me to come get my car out of the Tow Pound. That's right. They think that my car is still in Pittsburgh. Clearly they are confused because I have my car! Idiots! Anyway, now I have to fax them my credit card receipt Monday morning. It was bad enough that my car was towed and I had to pay for the parking ticket and the towing. *sigh*
In other news, it's raining a lot here in Virginia. 100% chance of rain through tomorrow night. Not exactly a lovely weekend, but at least it won't be too hot. Perhaps I'll actually put my bed frame together this weekend. Hmmmm.... Ooooooooo! Harriet has an interview with CGI-AMS next week. *joy* It would be waaaaaaaaaaaay too exciting if Har worked here too. :)
Okay, that it.

Wikipedia's Pic of the Day

From wikipedia.org: The central electrode of a Plasma lamp, showing a glowing blue plasma streaming upwards. The colors are a result of the radiative recombination of electrons and ions and the relaxation of electrons in excited states back to lower energy states. These processes emit light in a spectrum characteristic of the gas being excited.
How cool is this picture?

All sorts of things
- shrinking feet?
- traffic
- buggy!
- I may or may not come up with a fourth thing by the end of this. We'll see what happens.
Traffic... So, I worked late Tuesday and Wednesday (until about 6:30). On Tuesday I got home in about 20 minutes. Yesterday I sat in bumper to bumper traffic for an hour! 60 minutes! For 10 miles! Lame.
Buggy! Congrats to Arnold and McCue for being elected Sweepstakes Chair and Safety Chair. Arnold, I think you are a bit crazy for being on the committee for two years, but I respect you like crazy for it. Adam, enjoy looking at all of the buggies and all of the hate/threats/nonesense that comes with it. To both of you, lots of luck dealing with the barricades. :)
Fourth thing! Actually, this is why I wanted to write this post but I forgot about it until a few second ago... Question, should I buy myself a regular DVD player or one that can also record DVDs? I don't really want to be that tied to my TV... and the ones that record DVDs are at least $100 more. Cast your votes now!
Love,
Sara

Tau Lambda Mu Sigma Sigma Rho...
I just wanted to send out some electronic love and support to my sisters. Don't let the disappointments of this weekend get you down. It is perfectly understandable to be disappointed about certain girls who did not choose Zeta, but do not that their choice affect how you feel about yourselves as individuals and as a sisterhood. You are strong, capable, wonderful women and you will have sucess in IMR.
The history of Zeta is all about overcomming challenges. It is about making something extraordinary out of a difficult situation. It is about evolving as women and as a house. Our founders did it. You have the strength and abilities to do it too.
As an alum, I was so proud of the courage and strenth you showed by walking into Rangos cheering and smiling. I know that I am not the only alum to feel that way.
Be proud of yourselves. Have a wonderful IMR. I can't wait to meet the Alpha Alpha class. :)
Love in ZYE,
Sara

Hurricane Katrina spam
In related news, Mike "What's a hurricane?" Brown resigned (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/09/12/AR2005091200935.html) Not a big surprise. Now if only we could get the rest of the administration out of office... sigh... Only 1,226 more days.

lots of different things
*Disclaimer* This post is basically a stream of consciousness. Do not attempt to find clarity or organization.
Having furniture is cool. Having a partially assembled TV bench in the middle of your living room and being surrounded by empty boxes and packaging material is slightly less cool. I tried putting my TV bench together last night only to discover (when the bench was 60% done) that the screws meant to attach some hardware were too big for the holes on the hardware. Lame. I guess I'll have to call Ikea and figure out what happened. I know that I'm using the right screws... why can't they just fit? Stupid, stupid, stupid.
Happy (belated) Birthday Steph! I don't know if you read this, but I did send you a really cool birthday card. :) Miss you!
Virginia drivers are seriously crappy. On my way to work Tuesday morning (a 10 mile trip) I saw so many examples of truly awful (and dangerous) driving. Slowing down and driving close to the right lane is not a good way to merge (especially when the traffic you are trying to merge with is stopped while the traffic in your lane is moving). I was stuck behind that person while they figured out how to merge. Not pretty.... I saw similar stupidity a 3 miles later when a driver in a right turn only lane tried to merge left into traffic that was not moving. This caused a major backup in the traffic behind this idiot (where I was). Again, I was *unimpressed*. There was more, but forget specific examples… My various observations of bad driving have started to blend together.
Speaking of driving, as I was driving home on Tuesday I noticed a grasshopper sitting on my side view mirror. He stay securely there even as the car got up to 45mph! It was pretty funny to see his antennae blown straight back in the breeze. After about a mile or so, he hopped off the car.
I’m going to CPK with Karthik tonight. Perhaps some mayhem will follow.
Until then, I leave you with this thought:
Aerodynamically, the bumble bee shouldn’t be able to fly, but the bumble bee doesn’t know that so it goes on flying anyway.

I almost forgot!
1) The response to Hurricane Katrina has been truly embarrassing. How can we send troops halfway around the world (where we shouldn't be anyway) and not be able to provide relief to our own citizens at home? FEMA, Homeland Security, the President, etc. knew that New Orleans would be in trouble from a storm like this. Why did it take so long to get those people help? A lot of the TV reporters have been asking Secretary Chertoff and Director Brown to explain why it took so long and why we were so unprepared. They have responded by defending the actions they have taken and by stating that their current focus is on providing help rather than pointing fingers. While I agree that now is the time for focusing on helping the victims, I really hope that the media doesn't let these guys off the hook a few weeks from now. The country deserves an explanation. The people of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast deserve an explanation. Meanwhile, shame on you Mr. Bush. Shame on you Secretary Chertoff. Shame on you Director Brown.
2) Chief Justice William Rehnquist died on Saturday. Now John Roberts (at only 50 years old) has been nominated for Chief Justice, a position he could hold for 30+ years. Very scary. Plus, Bush now needs to fill Sandra Day O'Conner's spot. 2 Supreme Court Justices. I really hope the Congressional Dems can give him a fight for the Associate Justice spot. I think I might throw up (or more) if there are 6 conservatives on the court. At least Roberts has said that he will uphold Roe v. Wade (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_G._Roberts%2C_Jr.#Roe_v._Wade), and he supported the Supreme Court's decision to overturn a Colorado state constitution amendment that would have prohibited legislative, executive and judicial action designed to protect gays from discrimination.
Bush's approval rating is the lowest of his presidency (45% approval, 53% disapp, according to ABC News and the Washington Post). If only the country had been this smart 10 months ago. *sigh*
Three day weekends are cool and stuff
So, my last semester at CMU I had 4 day weekends... And that was pretty awesome (read: REALLY REALLY awesome). Two day weekends, on the other hand, are total poo. But now I've come to appreciate three day weekends. You can get so much more done (or so much less done, which is also really nice) with just one extra day.
So here's what I did with my three day weekend:
Friday: Anna came over and saw my apartment for the first time. She was pretty impressed and very jealous of all the closet space. We ordered pizza, watched TV (TNT played Forrest Gump ~ a bazillion times this weekend), gossiped and just chilled out. We both had had a *long* week at work and really needed to just relax with a friend. I <3 the Schardt. Mal also called while Anna was there and gave me a play-by-play of DSW. She's starting to rival me with her shoe obsession. I'm so proud.
Saturday: Ate breakfast and became hypnotized by my TV for most of the morning. Then I went down to Ikea to get some freakin' furniture! (Btw, I had a really good away message for Saturday afternoon that I need to repeat here: Ikea, Youkea, WeAllkea! Isn't that funny? Well, I thought it was funny. :P) Traffic was wonderfully minimal and since I actually checked the exit number I didn't repeat the trouble Trey and I had back in July. (Let us never speak of that again). I spent a long while wandering around and trying to figure out what I wanted. I finally settled on the Klippan sofa in black, the Poang chair and ottoman in birch/black, and the Bonde TV bench in birch. All that stuff was heavy so I paid to have it all delivered on Monday (can you believe that they were delivering stuff on Labor day? I was really surprised). Then I went home and recovered from the crowd at Ikea with SVU and popsicle therapy. Very helpful.
Sunday: Went grocery shopping (my refrigerator was starting to look really sad). Then I went to the pool for some sun and fresh air. I was pleasantly surprised to find the pool almost empty. In the 2.5 hours I was there, there was about 10 other people at the pool. And no kids making noise and splashing. So relaxing! Plus it wasn't too hot. I got a good bit of reading done and had a nice nap. Sunday night consisted of more TV (Clear and Present Danger on AMC) and ice cream therapy (I really recommend it). I also got a call from Ikea saying that my furniture would be delivered between 2 and 6pm on Monday. That was pretty crappy b/c it meant that I couldn't really go anyway on Monday. :(
Monday: I made the best of being stuck at home by throwing out 6 (six!) empty furniture boxes, general apartment cleaning and some cooking (jambalaya and mac'n'cheese). The furniture arrived at 5pm and was fully assembled (minus the TV bench) by 6pm. My living room looks so different now. It's like an actual room (minus lighting and plus more boxes and packaging crap). I also passed the day by switching between the SVU marathon and the CSI marathon until 4pm when I switched to the West Wing Marathon. :) (Yes, Zetas, I have returned to my old habits)
All in all, it was a wonderful, productive (with minimal effort), relaxing weekend. I really needed it.
So, what did *you* do with your long weekend?

And Sara said "Let there be a new post!" And there was. And it was good.
I drove them to the airport Monday morning (read: we sat in traffic FOREVER on 395), and got to work bright and early at 8:15am. I stayed at work until 7pm and then drove home and turned into a zombie in front of my TV until crawling into bed around 10:30. Tuesday was another long day, with a bit more excitement. We had to evacuate the building around 3pm due to a small fire on my floor. The evacuation process was a bit crazy, but luckily it wasn't too sunny or hot outside.
I also got gas for my car on Tuesday morning. $2.65/gal at the "cheap" Citgo. Then Katrina demolished the Gulf Coast and made gas prices go to shit even more. When I drove past that Citgo this morning, regular was going for $2.95/gal... one of only 2 gas stations (out of about 10) that I passed this morning that were selling regular for under $3. You hear that America? Give up your stupid SUVs... walk or ride your bike more... we can't keep living like this!
I don't have any Labor Day plans yet... Hopefully that will change by tomorrow. I miss my friends!
Final thought: Whoa! It's September! How the heck did that happen? It is very strange not having a "First Day of School" for the first time in 17 years. I feel old.

Oh happy day!
Today's beautiful weather was only surpassed my the beautiful picture of my TV once the guy from Cox came over to install my cable. Oh man. I <3 HDTV. Seriously. You don't know what you're missing with regular tv. It's soooooo worth it.
Okay, I'm gonna go eat a popsicle and watch my beautiful tv.
peace out.

Weekend Update
My dad also brought down a bunch of stuff that I had left in NY. Mostly clothes (finding a place for them was no small task), but also a box of random stuff like my Lego letters from Jen, my Garden State soundtrack, and my Blue's Clues chair from Steph. :) I missed my stuff. :)
I also got really excited on Sunday because I saw that gas had gone *down* $0.01 at the Citgo where I filled up last week. That is the first time I've seen gas go down all summer. Very exciting. But it's still kinda sad that I got excited about $2.62/gal.
My HD cable will be set up tomorrow night. I'm very excited. Now I *really* need a couch. I'll regale you with stories about the beauty of the picture tomorrow or Wednesday. :)

A case of the Mondays
- seeing that gas has gone up $0.20 over the weekend
- getting cut off by a stupid SUV
- hearing a jake break
- hearing the j-breaking truck have some nasty-sounding transmission issues
On the plus side, today is pay day plus I just got a $500+ reimbursement from my trip to NJ last month.

A long week
I bought a cute little lamp for my desk on Tuesday (I think it was Tuesday... I haven't slept well this week). My bedroom is really coming together. I'll try to post some pictures this weekend. The living room is still a total disaster, but I'll have to do something about that because my mom and sister are staying with me August 25-29. Maybe I'll take some before photos of the mess. lol.
Weekend plans:
- Tonight- probably watching a movie in bed and going to sleep early... It's been a long week.
- Saturday - Oil change for my car, maybe getting a chair for my desk, cleaning the apartment, Ivan's housewarming party.
- Sunday - wandering around D.C. with Gregdor, probably more cleaning.

Amazingness
But wait... It gets better. I bought myself a new camera yesterday to replace my 4-year-old Sony with its measley 2.3 megapixels and ability to go through batteries faster than.... something really fast! My new camera is a Nikon Coolpix 4600. It is awesome and small and fabulous. Hooray.
Meanwhile, I have to get through another long day of design writing... I was at the office until 6:30pm yesterday. On the plus side, traffic was much lighter and I got home in under 20 minutes. Hopefully today won't be as late.peace out.

Happiness is a warm... desk!
My weekend in Pittsburgh was wonderful. It felt so good to be back in Zeta and among my sisters. I feel refreshed and rejuvinated. :) Amazingness. Also, I now have an (unassembled) bed frame that matches my dresser and (unassembled) nightstand. w00t!
Now if only I had a couch...

Dell is a big pile of poo.
On the plus side, I am leaving for Pgh in an hour and my wonderful sisters will wash away all of my frustrations. :) I love you ladies and I can't wait to see you! Oh man... I just realized that I can have truck for lunch tomorrow... OH MAN!

so sad
This is so unfortunate... How did NASA go from sending 12 men to the moon 35 years ago to not being able to enter Earth's orbit without loosing a huge chunk of foam?
... go go CEV? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crew_Exploration_Vehicle)
Life is not awful!
Life is awful!

Why Jerry Maguire is such an awesome movie...
1. Tom Cruise -- before he went all psycho, divored Nicole, and starting spouting craziness at Matt Lauer.
2. Amazing dialogue... Here are a few examples:
Rod: I feel for you, man. But a real man wouldn't shoplift the pootie from a single mom.
Jerry: I didn't shoplift the pootie.
[Rod gives him a long look]
Jerry: All right. I shoplifted the pootie.
Jerry: I love you. You... complete me.
Dorothy: You had me at hello.
Ray: D'you know that the human head weighs 8 pounds? D'you know that bees and dogs can smell fear?
3. Renee Zellweger is phenomenal.
4. Jonathan Lipnicki (the little kid who is now 14 and has braces) and Cuba Gooding Jr. are hysterical!
5. The wisdom of Dicky Fox.
6. An amazing soundstrack.

Update-O-Rama
First: Why Mallory Snyder makes my heart smile
CMUCurlyQ: tot may yay splay
... truly remarkable. Mal, Pashley and I were all in the Bestchester last weekend for my 22nd and Harriet's 21st. Such a blast. We saw Wedding Crashers Saturday night. Sooooooooo funny. I didn't have very high expectations, but I was really impressed. Plus, I don't exactly mind looking at Owen Wilson for 2 hours. :)
And, of course, I also got a pretty awesome birthday present Saturday morning: Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince. I finished it Monday night. Oh my goodness. If you have finished it, you *must* call me! I'm going crazy without someone to talk to about it.
I had my first business trip this week (in lovely Trenton, NJ). It was interesting, and now I've got tons of stuff to do at work. On a related note, people who stop in the middle of hallways in Union station or a Metro station (or any other crowed public place) are awful, especially when they have a rolling suitcase or similar with them that you can barely keep yourself from falling all over and dumping all of your bags everywhere and causing even more of a disturbance! Okay, I'm better now.
My computer is still somewhere in Dell/DHL land. Ask me about it if you want to hear a really awful story. To summarize, my hard drive died around the middle of June (yes, it was only 3 months old) and due to various acts of extreme stupidity (Dell and DHL) and bad luck I've been without a computer for 6 weeks and counting. At least my work computer is a laptop, so I can bring it home and have some internet access on the weekends. Ugh...
Plans for this weekend:
- buying an awesome TV (if I can find some way of getting it from Arlington to my apartment)
- reading/sleeping
- working on my tan
- grocery shopping
- receiving my computer (???? PLEASE!!!!!!!!!)
... I live such an exciting life.
Peace out.
I <3 firefox

First Post
I just finished (10 minutes ago) my 5th week of work. It is going well, although some things are frustrating at times (like stupid slow VPN connections).
All in all, life is pretty good. My apartment is lovely and spacious (partially due to the fact that I don't have much furniture to speak of). I <3 my car. There is a plentiful supply of CMU folks around and many more non-CMU folks for me to find. :) I'm having dinner with Anna tomorrow and then we're gonna go see War of the Worlds. On Sunday Karthik, Jen K and I are going to get lunch and see The Fantastic Four. And (hopefully) Trey and I are going to go to Ikea and get me a desk and dresser at some point.
Busy busy busy.
Okay, that's enough for now. Time for the commute home.
